Sandra Van Scotter, Candidate for Congress, Congressional District 20

"Sandra is a Chicago native who transplanted to Ridgecrest, CA in 2014. Sandra and her sons agree that moving to this area of California was the best choice they have ever made! Joining the Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club helped Sandra build her foundation to begin to run the Race For Our Lives!

Sandra is number 4 of 8 siblings, raised in a very large, working-class family. Dad was a Teamster's member, and Mom wrangled the kids until they were all able to wrangle themselves. They all went to college or vocational training to carve their own paths to success.

While serving as a Respiratory Therapist for 20 years at rural hospitals and university medical teaching hospitals, Sandra learned the "ins and outs" of how health insurance works and learned very quickly that health insurance is not designed to support actual "health care".

Sandra's personal experiences with her own disabled son brought her into the arena of Disability Advocacy and navigating California's complicated Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and the Regional Center system that DDS funds. Employed as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Sandra works directly with Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled (I/DD) adults, listening to them describe how they want to live their lives and guiding them through the processes of how to get to the desired outcomes they state for themselves.

Sandra was appointed by California's State Council on Developmental Disabilities to serve on the Kern Regional Center Self-Determination Program Local Volunteer Advisory Committee in 2022 and is currently serving as the Chairperson of that committee.

All of the people Sandra works for are already prepared for the intentionally cruel withholding of access to the benefits they desperately need to survive, so when HR1 was passed and NONE of our Representatives from either party came to explain what happened, why it happened and what people can do to help themselves, Sandra knew that they only way we were going to get the representation we need in CD20 is if she ran for Congress!
